Cancer is the development of abnormal cells in the body. These abnormal cells grow and spread to other parts of the body. They grow and affect the normal cells hence reducing the function of the affected organ. The growth of tumor in the bodies have become a life threatening condition.
Viruses and bacteria cause cancer directly by affecting the cells in conjunction with other viruses caused by chronic inflammation hence reducing the immune system function. The researches to find a proper cure for cancer started in the 18th century because of the widespread use of microscope. Therefore the journey to cancer cure started by evolution of many forms of treatment, by scientist.
Cancer in the 18th century
In this era, there was evolution of radiation therapy which was used to treat cancer. Researchers devised x-rays for diagnosis and it was discovered that daily use of radiation therapy improved the cancer patient’s chance for cure.
However this didn’t go well in the 19th century because due to too much exposure to radiations, many developed leukemia. However in the 20th century and because of the emergence of technology, it was discovered that radiation could also contribute to the growth of cancerous cells.
Emergence of chemotherapy
Nitrogen mustard was discovered during World War II. It was a chemical that was being developed to make effective agents of war. It was found to work against cancer of the lymph nodes. Therefore, these agents killed the DNA of the cancer cells. This is what led to the emergence of chemotherapy. It was discovered that chemo can control cancer for long period without actually curing it.
In the 20th century it was later discovered that small cancers that can be removed by surgery are curable. They later used radiation to control tumor growth, and finally chemotherapy was added to completely kill the remaining cancer cells. This has improved greatly the search for cancer cure.
Evolution of immune therapy
Clinical trials found immunotherapy to be effective for fighting cancer. Biological therapy helps improve the immune system to identify cancer cells and aim an antibody on these tumors. In the 19th century, scientists were able to develop monoclonal antibodies that targeted the cancer cells.
Therefore, of late, scientists have been studying vaccine that improve the immune system and help it aim the cancer cells. This represents a key milestone to cancer treatment.
What does the future holds
There has been a remarkable progress for the last decades to find cancer cure. Computer technology is aiding cancer research, hence advancement on the treatment methods. Scientists are doing more research on molecular biology to have a target therapy that is aimed at proteins of the cancer cells.
